A Worthy Pop-Up Bar to Help Domestic Violence Survivors
I’m thrilled to join forces with Newhouse, the Kansas City area’s longest-standing domestic violence shelter, for this year’s Worthy Fundraiser. Together with Aaron Bowman, we’ve launched a team to raise vital funds and I want to share why this mission means so much.
Founded in 1971, Newhouse has grown from humble beginnings into a beacon of hope for anyone facing domestic violence...women, men, children, and even pets. They provide holistic support: a safe place to stay, 24/7 crisis hotline access, trauma-informed care, legal guidance, job-readiness training, childcare, educational programs, and more.
Newhouse offers an ecosystem of transformative services designed to shatter the cycle of abuse. Their focus spans:
- Safety & Emergency Shelter: 92 beds available for immediate escape
- Hotline & Crisis Intervention: Over 15,000 calls answered in 2023
- Children’s Center: Educational, therapeutic support for babies through teens
- Legal Support & Advocacy: Ensuring survivors can navigate protective orders and court systems
- Whole‑Person Healing: Counseling, job training, education, basic needs, and transitional housing
As CEO Courtney Thomas puts it, Newhouse is an “innovative, empathetic disrupter.” They offer help to all survivors, regardless of age, gender, or life situation, all in one trauma-informed space.
Last year, Newhouse provided nearly 30,000 bed-nights and served over 750 adults and children. This work isn’t possible without community backing. That’s where you come in.
Join Aaron and I by donating, and/or spreading the word, through our fundraiser page:

Together, we can help continue to fuel Newhouse’s ecosystem of ensuring every domestic violence survivor has the chance for safety, healing, and a brighter future.
Thanks!
