Beyond GDP Index (BGI)

We all know GDP is a terrible measure of how a country is doing. We've known this for decades. Robert Kennedy said it in 1968. Stiglitz, Sen, and Fitoussi wrote a whole commission report about it in 2009. And still, every quarter, every election cycle, we talk about GDP like it is the only metric that can tell us something about actual human flourishing.

I wanted something that uses SS&F's framework to help talk about what successful society looks like.

The Beyond GDP Index scores 196 countries across 8 dimensions of wellbeing: material living standards, health, education, personal activities, political voice, social connections, environment, and security. 27 indicators pulled from 10 data sources: World Bank, WHO, UNDP, V-Dem, Freedom House, Transparency International, and others. They're then aggregated with a weighted geometric mean and wrapped in Monte Carlo confidence intervals to help prevent mistaking precision for certainty.

There are country rankings, of course. And you can drill in to see exactly which indicators are pulling a country up or dragging it down. There's also an option to adjust the weighting yourself to see what happens if you prioritize health matters more than material wealth, or political voice over security.

I was just kinda tired of the media collapsing GDP into an everything metric. Perhaps you'll find it useful too.
