Pro Soccer
Once came a youthful hero
who could kick a ball
straight through a brick wall.
Drafted then, paid to deliver
that ball through other people –
their bellies, their heads.
Ruddy god among ball kickers
divine piston legs
indifferent to defenses.
Ball blockers, ball stoppers world-wide
soon refused to play for they
wished not for chests with gaping holes.
Still, they were paid handsomely
to stand hard and die holey.
Sport often makes no sense.
