We Have a Black Cat
We call her Lily
It’s short for Lillian
We used to call her Black Jesus
She has a hole in her ear
From some fight or another
Where we hung a gold earring
Now she looks like a pirate
One day she came home
After nightly amusements
With her back thigh ripped open
By a hungry hawk’s claws
Ligament and muscle
Glistened when she walked
Yet she didn’t seem fazed
Do cats feel no pain?
We took her to the vet
They wished her good luck
Told her to stay clean
Yet when we got her home
She ran right outside
And rolled in the dirt
Pets are a real pain
We don’t treat them like children
Because make no mistake
If we die in our sleep
Our pets would feast on us
Our children won’t eat us
At least that’s what we hope
